5 Severe Eye Conditions to Treat With Scleral Lenses

These lenses are large rigid gas permeable lenses. They have a large diameter to accommodate different conditions that do not fit the standard rigid gas permeable lenses. They lay on the eye's sclera but rise over its cornea.

The arch leads to the formation of a space separating the lens and the surface of the cornea. That space leads to the development of a tear film that helps hydrate the eyes. Scleral lenses are thus quite comfortable and suitable for hard-to-fit conditions. Among these conditions are refractive errors and healing of the cornea.

Treating Eye Conditions With Scleral Lenses

The primary eye conditions in need of scleral lenses are ocular surface diseases and corneal irregularity. The other conditions include severe astigmatism, dry eyes, and keratoconus.

Ocular Surface Diseases

Ocular surface diseases include conditions like Stevens-Johnson's and Sjögren’s syndromes. Scleral lenses protect the front ocular surface from exposure.

Stevens-Johnson’s syndrome is a disorder that affects the body’s mucous membranes and skin. It affects the eyelids and eyes, causing inflammation, scarring, and tissue damage. Sjögren’s syndrome is an autoimmune disease, and one of its symptoms is chronic dry eyes. In both cases, scleral lenses help to hydrate, restore, and protect the ocular surface.

Many other conditions result in ocular surface diseases. In all these, scleral lenses act as a protection, and they also help with any vision problems in the process.

Corneal Irregularity

Corneal irregularities result from corneal surgery or trauma. These irregularities can significantly reduce one’s ability to function and quality of life. Depending on the damage and the severity of the symptoms, one can benefit greatly from scleral lenses.

Scleral lenses help in hard-to-fit situations where regular rigid, gas-permeable lenses are not an appropriate fit. Scleral lenses provide stability and protection, allowing the eyes to heal where they need to.

Severe Dry Eyes

Dry eye is a common but extremely uncomfortable condition. The eyes do not generate enough tears, or the tears are of poor quality. They, therefore, evaporate into the atmosphere very quickly. The eyes lack lubrication and protection from debris, dust, and bacteria. It results in a feeling of dryness in the eyes, sandy like something is stuck in them. They also sting and burn.

Tears help to adequately lubricate, clean, and protect the eyes. They protect them from bacteria and debris that can scratch the cornea. Scleral lenses bend over the cornea, creating a liquid reservoir of tears. This continuously lubricates the eye, helping patients with dry eyes to manage their condition.

Keratoconus

Standard gas permeable lenses usually help treat this condition. However, the lens may not always center properly. It may move when you blink or move your eyes, causing discomfort. Switching to scleral lenses may help solve the problem. They are more comfortable since they rest on the sclera and do not move. As such, they are more stable than regular gas permeable lenses.

Severe Astigmatism

Some cases of astigmatism do not fit gas permeable lenses well. Toric lenses help some of these cases. The rest need scleral lenses. Scleral lenses can mask astigmatism and are stable regardless of the astigmatism orientation.
